Forge3 was founded in 2004 – almost nine years ago. Has it always been smooth sailing? Heck no! Not even close. If you own a small business, you know exactly what I mean. There are days that you’re on top of the world. There are also days when it feels like the world is against you and nothing you do is working out. We fall down a lot. We get bruised and battered. That’s not important. What IS important is that we get back up – just like my little girl who’s learning to take her first steps.
My daughter just turned one (wow, time flies, right!?). I watched her wobble around the room this weekend as she learns to walk. She was so proud – big smile and all as she struggled to make it to my open arms. Walking is hard work! She fell down at least a dozen times.
But she didn’t cry about it. She got back up with a determined look on her face. She looked me straight in the eyes, as if to say, “I can do this, daddy!” She tried again. And, eventually, she made it.
That’s when it dawned on me. There’s a lot we “know-it-all grownups” can learn from kids, especially in the business world. Growth requires change, and change is uncomfortable. It requires learning something new. And we’ll certainly fall down a few times as we get up-to-speed. But who cares!? Get up! Don’t let your ego get in the way of trying new things and dreaming big. Live, learn, get up and keep hustling!
Live and learn, like a kid
As a new dad, I’m starting to realize why kids are so much fun. We get to live life through their eyes. Life is simple. Let’s keep it that way. Explore, experiment and keep falling down. To be successful, we need to get up just ONE more time than we fall down.
To quote Bon Jovi…
“Take my hand and we’ll make it – I swear.”
For all the parents out there, do you feel the same? Any tips on how to slow down time? :)
