It’s not one thing

We were talking with a business a little while ago about their tagline. They were completely hung up on it. We brainstormed a bunch of options together, but they couldn’t find one that everyone liked. Weeks passed. Months passed. Today, they’re still stuck. How important is a tagline? Or your logo? Or your website? Or any other piece of the puzzle? It’s not one thing. It’s the collection of ALL things that make you who you are.

The forest for the trees

It’s so easy for all of us to get bogged down with the details. We step over the dimes to pick up the pennies. From the outside looking in, it’s silly. But, often times, we’re too deep in the weeds to know that we’re being silly. And we get stuck.

Perfect is the enemy of the good

A lot of us are perfectionists when it comes to our businesses. We want everything to be just right. That’s not necessarily bad, but we also need to recognize when it gets in the way of our longterm, big-picture success.

Remember, it’s an evolutionary process. We’re not going to get it right the first time. But keep moving. Facebook’s motto is “move fast and break stuff.” There’s something to be said for that.

The point is that you, your company and your brand are made up of a bunch of pieces. No one piece defines you. So, don’t get stuck. Get some momentum and keep riding it. Don’t stop!
