My license plate marketing experiment

By April 8, 2013 February 4th, 2019 5 Comments

I’ve always wanted to try this. Does having a personalized license plate help with exposure? Do people see the plate and use their smartphones to see what it’s all about? There’s only one way to find out.

The experiment

Last week, I received my very own “FORGE3” plate in the mail and installed it. And, I must say, I like it – although I may be a bit biased! :)

The assumption here in the office is that having the plate installed will likely NOT increase traffic to our website. However, in theory, it could. People might see “FORGE3” and Google it on their smartphones – hopefully at a stoplight and not while driving. Safety first!

So, using Google Analytics and our Inside the NumbersTM reporting, we’ll wait a month and see if there’s a┬ánoticeable┬áincrease in mobile traffic to our website. If there is, it could be because of the plate.

Will it work?

What do you think? Will we get more people checking out forge3.com because of the plate?

Time will tell. Stay tuned!

UPDATE: The results are in! See them here.

  • I'm not sure if a vanity plate will work, because I usually assume vanity plates are personal, but I think bumper stickers would!

  • I'd have a hard time sticking a sticker to my car, but would maybe do window clings.

  • Christopher Mesch says:

NO BUMPER STICKERS ALLOWED Jeff! That was in the fine print of the contract when you purchased the vehicle. As far as the plate goes, I used to have.
"I SELLM" on my plate. I did have people ask me what it meant in parking lots and at stop lights. I did not have a web site at the time to send them to, however it gave me the opportunity to give them a business card and ask if they were considering buying a new BMW. Now that I am selling real estate instead, the "SELLN LV" plate has been ordered! I will let you know how it works out!

  • Pat Dougherty says:

I saw a CT plate on some idiot's car that said DILLDOH!

  • That's interesting that people asked you about it. I haven't had that happen to me yet, but I'm guessing that I will now that the weather is nicer around here. I'll report back. Stay tuned!
